GET ON THE BUS PROGRAM FUNDRAISER
Fourth Grade is going to have a classroom raffle on Wednesday, April 8th 2009 in order to raise money for the "Get on the Bus Program". This is an annual event sponsored by the San Bernardino Diocese. It offers free transportation for children and their guardians/caregivers to visit their mothers or fathers incarcerated in prison. Many of these children have been separated from their parents and not been able to visit them in quite a while.( Some children haven't seen their parents in years.) The program provides transportation, food for the journey, and comforting teddy bears when the children have to end the visit. It simply offers sympathy and compassion for children. Fourth grade students may purchase raffle tickets for twenty five cents and bring in any added donations until April 8th. Students wrote a note in their best cursive writing in class to their parents explaining the classroom raffle. Any student returning a signed cursive letter will get a free raffle ticket on Tuesday, March 31, 2009.

4th Grade Homework Sheet
Dear Students and Parents,
Congratulations to the six students scoring 100% on those incredibly difficult 50 Spell-A-Thon words:
Hannah Debellis Sereena Andrade Khaeryst Estrella
Bryce Moreno Nicholas Sablan Christopher Powell
Great job! Your hard work and intense prayers during the test have paid off well! Congratulations!!
Enclosed are reading stories for the week that will take the place of the independent reading time and reading log. Please have students read these stories orally to a parent and then answer the questions correctly. Please note that if the student is unsure about an answer they may in fact go back to the story and re-read and search for the answer in the story. 4th graders have been learning reading strategies all year and practicing for many months regarding re-reading texts to find information.
Also, if your student is continuing to bring home daily homework not finished in class then they are not completing assignments in a timely manner. Please encourage them to talk less and work more everyday. Many students become easily distracted when it is time for them to practice the skills taught in the lesson and the classroom shifts from the teaching as a whole group to a student centered completion time.
Lastly, tutoring continues on Tuesday and Thursday mornings for students struggling in the area of language arts and mathematics. It starts promptly at 7:15 and ends at 7:45am. Additionally, struggling students should be working with a parent daily on math facts, reading comprehension skills, and also reviewing their weekly homework(especially math) before turning it in on Thursdays. Through the home and school working together, students will have a greater chance at academic success. Please note that school dismisses at noon on Friday, April 3
rd. Students need to wear full mass uniform and transportation arrangements need to be made ahead of time. Thanks so much!!

4th Grade Homework Sheet
Dear Students and Parents,
First of all, thank you to Ms. Andrade and Ms. Christy for volunteering to help out with the Spell-A-Thon. Report Cards are coming home today. Please review your child’s progress in fourth grade. The students that have continued to work hard and turn in corrections for tests below 75% in any subject have done very well this past trimester. Learning from past mistakes and making corrections is a fundamental step in the learning process. Students that take advantage of this opportunity often are able to improve their scores as well as their ability to progress in their areas for growth.
Reading Logs are due on Thursday, March 26th. They should be signed daily and include the pages read each day.

Dear Students and Parents,
You can always reach me at the school office @ 881-2416 or by contacting me at the following email address with any suggestions or questions:
yschemenauer.ourladyofassumption.ocs@sbdiocese.org Please note that if you are in need of a time to discuss your individual child, I am available through the school office phone or my email address to arrange a time for an appointment. Impromptu visits during school hours are not an adequate time for me to discuss individual student concerns. Thank you so much for understanding! (Please refer to the back to school letter and back to school night memo which clarified this procedure last September.)
The spell-a-thon list for fourth grade was given out to students on Tuesday 3/3/09. This week’s words will be 31-60, and the test will be March 19th.( Then the spell-a-thon will be a test on the entire 60 words on Friday, March 20th. I need two parent volunteers to correct Spell-A-Thon tests that same morning. (Please let me know if you are available ASAP—Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!)
The fourth grade students are working with Dr. Stauble to bring some needed supplies to school children of Ecuador. Dr. Stauble has worked with many students in fourth grade and she is leaving next week. Students are asked to donate kiddie toothbrushes and toothpaste, along with decorated pencils, sharpeners, and paper to our classroom by Wednesday, March 18th . These supplies will be donated to a rural school. Dr. Stauble will take pictures for us and share them with our classroom upon her return. We are grateful for this opportunity to live up to our Lenten practice of caring for the poor during this special season of the year.
Report Cards will be sent home on Friday, March 20th, 2009. Please encourage your student to finish the trimester well by completing all homework. Students are also expected to have all necessary school supplies on a daily basis. Thank you so much! It is a privilege to teach these students daily!
