Dear Students and Parents,
Thank you so much for the FABULOUS school year. I cannot believe it is the final week of fourth grade. I am very proud of each and every one of you! You have worked hard and finished well.
Please note that the homework folders contain corrected work. If your student needs to make corrections they must be turned into me on Monday, June 6th ONLY! I cannot accept corrections after that date since Report Cards will come home on Friday. Students were told this in class and know what is required.
There are five days worth of work next week! WHAT? Really? Yes, there are five assignments on the following sheet, but they are much different than previous weeks. I hope to make our final week together valuable, as well as a lot of fun!

You can use this email for me in the months to come as I will still be working for the Diocese of San Bernardino, while I transfer to St. Peter and St. Paul School in Rancho Cucamonga. I also hope to see all of you parents on Tuesday at our classroom awards at 11:00 sharp. Sports Day is on Thursday and any parents wanting to help can contact our room mom, Rosemary Zometa. MONDAY'S MATH MANIA

Students bring to school their favorite math skills board game. (Monopoly-counting all that money), (Battleship-Math Strategies) ( Deck of Cards-Crazy Eights) ETC. ETC. ETC. We will finish up our math tile centers and spend the day playing board games to keep our Math Skills ready for next year!

TUESDAY'S TOO BRIGHT SUPERSTARS

Students bring in their coolest pair of sunglasses and acceptance speeches for our Fabulous Fourth Grade Shining Stars Awards Show! Remember to thank all the people in your life that have helped you achieve your academic success in 4th grade. Write it out as if you were giving a speech at one of those fancy award shows on TV. Be ready to celebrate all of your success!The Show begins in Room 4 at 11:00 Am SHARP!It should conclude by 11:30!

WACKY WEDNESDAY'S RELAXING READING RITUAL

Students bring in their favorite books to share with the class, their favorite pillow and most comfortable slippers. They will “chillax” and curl up with their good books!(Yes- The Bible can be one of your favorite books too!)

THURSDAY'S KEEP IT FIT SPORTS DAY

Students may wear free dress, but please remember that open toed shoes cannot be worn. We will be going outside in the morning and should finish before lunch. Students can then relax with a movie afternoon. If anyone would like to bring in a healthy treat for the afternoon there are 19 students in the class.(No sugar please- think fruit or relish tray, popcorn, snacks suitable for “Keeping it fit!”)**Remember a hot dog lunch is available, but you must pre-order it with the slip and $2 fee ASAP.*

FRIDAY'S FAREWELL MASS WITH FATHER DAVID

Students must wear their full mass uniform and be on time to school. It is also our Kindergarten's graduation and the church should be quite full. Mass starts promptly at 8:15am. Remember school dismisses at noon on this last day of Fourth Grade! We will have a final class raffle after morning recess!

Dear Students and Parents,
     First of all, great job performing for our pastor, Father David, and the Senior Club at OLA on Thursday. It was a wonderful performance and brought so much laughter and joy to all in attendance. Thank you for being Ambassadors of Hope and bringing joy to others!
     Next, this week there are only three days worth of spelling, vocabulary, and math homework. The math    homework will consist of Math Excel lessons taught in class. Any work not completed in class will need to be finished at home. There is no school on Memorial Day Monday. Also, remember we will have Mass on Friday, June 3rd at 8:15am (wear your Mass uniform) and dismiss at noon.
     Finally, we are winding down the school year and these students have worked very hard! I am so proud of them. Please note the 4th grade awards are scheduled for Tuesday, June 7,2011 at 11 AM SHARP! Parents are welcome to join us in class as we honor and recognize these truly amazing students and reflect on their goals and personal growth for the 2010-2011 school year.
     On a sad note, I announced to the fabulous fourth grade and OLA School that I will be transferring next year to teach in my home parish, St. Peter & St. Paul School, in Rancho Cucamonga. I have enjoyed working with the parents, faculty,and amazing students here at OLA. I plan to visit you in the years to come. Thank you for being the best class ever. I will miss you all very much!

Dear Students and Parents,
First of all, great job on the Funfair performance Fabulous 4th Grade! Please remember that we are performing yet again for Father David and the Senior Club at OLA on Thursday, May 26th. Please bring your costume to school on Wednesday this week so we are sure to have everything we need to help pay a special tribute to Father David. Also on Thursday, students may have a Dollar Free Dress Day to help the victims of the tornadoes in the south. All money raised will be sent through the missions office to help provide relief for those affected by this most recent natural disaster. Thank you for being Ambassadors of Hope and caring for the needs of others!
Next,this week there is only spelling, vocabulary, and math homework. As we are preparing for 5th grade I would like all students to complete four spelling, four vocabulary, and all of the math homework this week.(No group A or B homework) Since we finished our handwriting book there are no more handwriting assignments for the rest of the year. However, all work completed is to be done in cursive writing so they will still get plenty of continual practice. The math homework will help them prepare for next week's math chapter test.
Finally, I am preparing a slide show of highlights from this year for the students during the final weeks of school. If you have any photos of the school year (field trips, PTG show, special activities or projects like El Camino Real,etc.) please send them in labeled with your name and student's name on the back of each photo. I will try to include as many as possible and return the photos the last week of school to you. If I don't get any from parents, I will just use the ones I have as best I can.

First of all, great job on the Book In A Can projects Fabulous 4th Grade!We previewed many great books for summer reading. We also learned so much from experiencing the oral presentations as a group!
Please remember that we are performing an Encore Performance at the OLA Funfair,this Sunday May 15 @ 12 noon. Please come dressed in your costume and meet us at the stage at 11:45am sharp. All students have verbally confirmed with me that they are attending and have let their parents/guardians know they are expected to be there to perform their part. The class is depending on each student to attend as a team effort!Let any relatives or friends that weren't able to make the performance know that they can come and watch these magnificent kids perform one more time at the OLA Funfair! After all, CHARACTER MATTERS!!!
Please be on time to your shift in the 4th grade booth. Thank you to all our parent volunteers and to Ms. Zometa for all of her hard work! It should be a fantastic Funfair and I look forward to seeing all of you there.

Dear Students and Parents,

HAPPY EASTER SEASON!

PTG Costumes are due to school tomorrow Tuesday, May 3rd.Please have the costume on a hanger with any accessory parts in a bag around the top of the hanger to keep them from being lost or misplaced. They will remain in the class until our performance this Thursday, May 5th. Students will get dressed at school for the 12:45pm afternoon performance after they eat their lunch. Then the costumes will be sent home for the children to get dressed and ready at home for the evening show. Please be in the 4th Grade classroom by 5:40 pm for the 6pm performance. Please understand that it is important for students to be on time at 5:40 so they can join their classmates in a peaceful, calm setting. Students may become nervous and the best way to help them overcome this is for adults to provide a calm, non-stress filled environment that allows for plenty of time to relax!

Fabulous fourth grade is working on their Book In A Can Project for April's reading goals. Please see the guideline sheet for further details.

4th grade is also beginning their family life unit. I will be teaching the students about God's Design and the virtue of Christian living. This will supplement our science and religion in the weeks to come as we learn about living healthy and holy lives. Please review the book tonight with your child and feel free to read the Parent Connection handout along with the glossary of vocabulary words on Pgs. 15-16.Also, remember this is the month we honor Mary and students are welcome to bring in flowers throughout the month to show their expressions of love. This Friday we will honor Mary immediately after Mass with the May Crowning. Parents are welcome to join us and school will dismiss at 12 noon.

There are only three days worth of homework and it has been altered so students can prepare for their PTG performance.Please follow the guideline below.

Easter Vacation Newsletter

Dear Students and Parents,
These amazing students should be congratulated this Holy Week for all of their service. They were great at hosting the Mass today and being part of Ms.Rosemary McDonald's Funeral Mass yesterday. People of the parish commented on how much they appreciated their angelic voices singing to the McDonald family.(Even their tears of love were appreciated.) I am so blessed to teach these students that daily meet the School Wide Learning Expectations to be Active Catholics and Ambassadors of Hope!
PTG costumes are due back to school Tuesday, May 3, 2011 and will stay in the 4th grade class until after the afternoon performance on May 5th. There are two performances at 12:45 and 6pm.We will also perform at the OLA Funfair at 12 noon on Sunday, May 15th.
Please continue to have them practice their songs at home over Easter Vacation. Also, students may practice their lines and acting parts since all actors are seen throughout the entire performance. They are truly wonderful and I believe the show will be a great way to express the importance of good character while having a lot of fun!
There is no regular homework over Easter Vacation. Students may read their AR books for their Book In the Can project or work on the construction of their Cans, but remember the cans and oral reports are not due until May 10th.

Spring Homework Continues with the Book In A Can Project...

Thanks so much to the parent volunteers that represented 4th grade for the Spell-A-Thon. We appreciate your participation so much!The Fabulous Fourth Grade did extremely well. There were many students that missed only one or two words. All students scored 75% and above and four students received special recognition for scoring 100% on the 60 words tested. These students are:

Fabulous fourth grade will begin Book In A Can Projects for April's reading goals. Please see the guideline sheet included in this week's homework folders. Students are to bring their books to class on Wednesday, April 13th for the book check in class. This project will count for their reading grade. We have gone over this in class today and student's should be able to relay the information to you well. The final projects and reports/oral presentations are due after Easter Vacation. Again please note the due dates in the guideline sheet and rubric sent home today.
Remember to save the date: May 5, 2011 for our PTG performance of Character Matters! PTG costumes are due to school April 18,2011. Dear Students and Parents,
Welcome to April. No Homework This Week! But there is actually homework this week.Happy April Fool's Day! Students finished their March reading goals well. We will work on Book In A Can reports for April's reading goals that will be due when we return from Easter Vacation in May. More information will follow next week.
PTG costumes are due to school April 18,2011. I hope the note sent home earlier this week helped clarify the expectations for what is required. Thank you for all of your help. All students are bringing home their scripts today and they should study their lines and words to the songs since beginning next week we will begin to practice in the hall without any scripts.
Next Friday is the OLA Spell-A-Thon. Please be sure that your student has their signed pledge sheet with them on Friday. I truly believe that all the students can score 100% per cent on this test if they study hard this week. We will take a practice test on Thursday in class and the students will write out 60 words from the list of 75 they have been using to study. Students receiving 100 per cent will be given special recognition and hopefully the money can help each family with the trimester assessment fees! GO FABULOUS 4th GRADE!

Dear Students and Parents,

Thank you for participating this week in helping the people of Japan spiritually through Mass attendance and physically through your donations. Fourth Grade is full of Ambassadors of Hope and Active Catholics!
PTG costumes are due to school April 18,2011. I hope the note sent home earlier this week helped clarify the expectations for what is required. Thank you for all of your help.
Students are enjoying the 4th grade website. We have discussed that they should have parent permission and supervision whenever having access to the internet. Thanks so much for helping your student adapt to the changes in technology while having a fun time learning. Next week we will be able to gain information and use some interactive links to complete future homework assignment options. It is very exciting! Check us out at www.fabulous4th.weebly.com.
Lastly, students should continue to AR read daily. Just use the Accelerated Reader link at www.olabruins.com to check the book to be sure it is in fact in their AR level. The goal for March is for each student to read 4 books in their AR level before March 31 and score 80% or above on the comprehension test. We also have started taking vocabulary tests on each book read since an increased vocabulary often leads to improvement in comprehension skills.

Thank you so much for helping your child learn the songs for the upcoming PTG that will be performed on May 5, 2011. Below is a list of costumes and requirements for your student to bring to school for a costume check. Please note that if your child is part of a group we are requesting that the costumes and accessories match so that it will be easy to identify their group onstage.
We have heard from many parents willing to volunteer to help and we appreciate your support so much. Please review the list and get the necessary supplies needed. Some parents prefer to make their costumes while others might find purchasing them more convenient. Please try to follow our requests so that the students can look uniformed as a group. 4th Grade Homework Sheet

Dear Students and Parents,
There is no school on Friday, March 18th due to a diocesan closure for a teacher retreat. Also,there is no school on Monday due to a technology training for teachers in order to use our new smart boards. Students' homework folders are due one week from today, March 24, 2011.
Please note the unique assignments this week as they are a bit different than usually scheduled homework. Students are working on a Trumpet of the Swan Math Project that I have explained to them in class. They will need to work on this a bit each day in order to have it complete for the March 24th deadline. I am hoping that all students can have their parents review the homework before turning it in each week.
The fabulous 4th grade will attend Mass on Wednesday, March 23rd to pray for the people of Japan. Also, Friday, March 25th will be a Dollar Dress Day. Students may wear free dress for $1.00 and all the proceeds will be donated through the diocesan charity to help the victims of the tsunami, and earthquake. Parents wanting to donate additional money can send in checks made out to OLA School with “Japan” in the memo line in order to designate the donated money for tax purposes. Thank you for your support.
Students are enjoying the 4th grade website. We have discussed that they should have parent permission and supervision whenever having access to the internet. Thanks so much for helping your student adapt to the changes in technology while having a fun time learning. Dear Students and Parents,
There is no school next Friday, March 18th due to a diocesan closure for a teacher retreat. I am hoping that all students can have their parents review the homework before turning it in each week. This will help students stay accountable and also gain clarification before the homework is graded for points. Since we are in the 3rd trimester some of the math homework is becoming very advanced. The students have been taught the lessons prior to the homework practice but could benefit from parents reviewing their work. Thanks so much for your help!
Also, I am excited to announce that fabulous fourth grade will have our own website up and running next week. This website is a result of the technology seminar Mrs. Schemenauer attended last week. Report Cards are being sent home today. Please review these with your child and discuss their areas of strengths and areas for growth. The fabulous fourth grade students have done really well and should continue to work hard through this final trimester. The report cards do not need to be returned to school since we have already kept a copy for their records.
Also, please remember that Wednesday, March 9th is Ash Wednesday. Students need to be wearing full Mass uniform and be on time to school. We will attend Mass and need to be walking over to the church right when the bell rings at 7:55am. Tardy students will need to be escorted into the church by parents since all staff members will be attending this Mass. This will begin our Lenten journey and we want to start it off right!

Fabulous Fourth Grade moves on with their March Reading Goals:

Students are bringing home Reading Logs for the month of March. They were given directions in class today specifically explaining what is expected for the logs. (Please allow your 4th grade ambassador to explain this to you the parent educator.)
Students will read an Accelerated Reader leveled book four days a week for each week in March. Reading Logs should be kept in their Homework Folders and signed regularly as they will count towards their third trimester reading grade. The final log will not be due until April 1, 2011, but the logs will be checked every Thursday for reading points and to help students stay on track. Students then should take FOUR A.R. reading comprehension and vocabulary tests in class as they complete each book. The goal of reading four chapter books per month remains and the students are achieving their goals fabulously. Keep Reading!

LOVE IS IN THE AIR...

FABULOUS FOURTH GRADE'S VALENTINE BREAKFAST...

Dear Students and Parents,
   The 4th grade students are looking forward to celebrating Valentine's Day on Monday, February 14, 2011 in the 4th grade classroom. We will celebrate by having our "party"first thing in the morning with a fourth grade breakfast. I have purchased the paper supplies and we will have breakfast in the classroom. Donated items should be on/in disposable plates or tins and ready to eat. We won't be cooking in the classroom, but instead make or prepare our breakfast foods at home and drop them off first thing Monday morning at 7:50 AM (Five minutes before school starts). Please feel free to follow the list below suggested by the fabulous fourth grade students or bring a nutritious addition appropriate for early morning eating.
   Students can write Valentine Cards and sign each card before class, to be part of the Valentine card exchange. PLEASE DO NOT WRITE NAMES ON CARDS, but only sign your name at the end of the Valentine message. We completed Valentine Bags during our art lesson on Thursday to use for this traditional exchange. We have 19 students in fabulous fourth grade. Since we have been studying fractions: 7/19 of the class are boys and the rest are girls. Ask your fourth grade students to tell you what fraction of the remaining students are girls. (They should be able to tell you accurately since they have proved to be brilliant with fractions in class.)
   The following students VOLUNTEERED to bring the following items to school on Monday for our breakfast:

We began reading Trumpet of the Swans on Monday, January 31, 2011. The students will work on improving reading comprehension skills while reading this story and practice writing more effectively. Student’s grades can be checked by visiting www.gradelink.com regularly.
This week we will continue to work on fractions in math. We will also begin working again on our maintenance math lessons by completing some Excel Math lessons. Students not finishing in class next week, will need to add the lesson to their homework time.
Students should continue to AR read daily. Just use the Accelerated Reader link at www.olabruins.com to check the book to be sure it is in fact in their AR level. The goal for February is for each student to read 4 books in their AR level before February 28 and score 80% or above on the comprehension test. Happy Catholic Schools Week! The theme this year is
“A+ for America”- Please refer to the yellow sheet sent home last week for all the details. Remember, students not wanting to participate in the different theme days may continue to wear the appropriate OLA uniform throughout the week.
We will begin reading Trumpet of the Swans on Monday, January 31, 2011. Each student needs a copy of the book for class. Please check the school library or local libraries for a copy of the book if you do not want to purchase it. The students will work on improving reading comprehension skills while reading this story and practice writing more effectively. Also, next Friday (2/4/11) is our monthly school Mass in church. Students should wear full mass uniform. Parents are welcome to join us in this celebration at 8:15am sharp. School will dismiss at noon, so please have transportation arrangements made accordingly.

Dear Students and Parents,
The students did a great job with El Camino Real and the mission models were fabulous! Students answered many questions and the OLA greater school community learned a lot from the 4th grade docents! Thank you to all parents for taking an active role in supporting their learning.
We will begin reading Trumpet of the Swans on Monday, January 31, 2011. Each student needs a copy of the book for class. Please check the school library or local libraries for a copy of the book if you do not want to purchase it. The students will work on improving reading comprehension skills while reading this story and practice writing more effectively. Student’s grades can be checked by visiting www.gradelink.com regularly.
Next, enclosed in this homework folder are your students’ 2nd trimester star reading placements’ results for the tests they took to determine their Accelerated Reader (AR) reading level last week. Please review whether your student has increased their level since their first trimester assessment. Students need to be reading at a 4.5 GE at this point in the school year. Anything below that is below fourth grade reading level. If your student is below reading level the best way to help them improve is to increase daily reading time! An optimal amount of time for your student to read independently to help them increase their fluency and comprehension is 60 minutes per day. Remember, you are the primary educator of your child so if your student needs additional reading time with appropriate chapter books please make sure this is happening daily in your home. Reading is one of the truest academic subjects meaning you get out of it what you put into it! It is a fact that students that read the best are the students that often read the most. Students can use the classroom library, the OLA school library, and any books you have purchased them or may check out from a public library. Just use the Accelerated Reader link at www.olabruins.com to check the book to be sure it is in fact in their AR level.

Please remember there is no school on Monday in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Therefore, please note the three days worth of homework assignments. Students should complete one vocabulary and one spelling assignment each day. Refer to the schedule and please have homework folders organized by Thursday.
The students will do a great job with “El Camino Real” when they also turn in their Mission projects on Thursday, January 20, 2011. Students will answer many questions and the OLA greater school community can attend from 1:45-2:15pm in the fourth grade classroom! Please remember to bring your corrected mission report with you so you can each answer intelligent questions about your mission. Thank you for supporting active learning!

Happy New Year! I am looking forward to a great 2011 with the fabulous fourth grade. Please check the homework schedule for all assignments due on Thursday, January 6. Mission Model Projects are not due to class until Thursday, January 20, 2011. Please do not send them in early since space in the classroom is limited. Students were sent home with the guideline sheet for Mission Model Projects in December. If your student has not shown you this sheet please remind them to show it to you and to check their mailboxes daily in class. Projects may be worked on over the next three weeks and are not due to class until Thursday, January 20, 2011. These social studies projects will not be checked as part of the weekly homework this week, but are included in this sheet as a reminder of the project work that needs to be completed. (Maybe spend this week deciding on what type of supplies will be needed and organizing or planning a shopping trip to gather the supplies needed? Just get started!)
Next, Friday, January 7, 2011 is an all school mass so please wear Full Mass uniform. Parents are welcome to join us in church at 8:15 am sharp! School will dismiss at noon and transportation arrangements should be made in advance.Please send your child to school on Monday, January 10, 2011 with gloves or mittens for a special science activity. 2) Write out one multiplication problem per card beginning with 0-12 for designated numbers above.
3) Write the complete problem with the answer on back of card (NOT ANSWER ONLY!)

Fabulous Fourth Grade Christmas Party 12/17/10

CHRISTMAS PARTY 2010

Dear Parents and Students,
Fabulous Fourth Grade will have their Christmas party on Friday, December 17, 2010 from 12:30-2:30 pm. This year the fourth grade students have an opportunity to create and decorate Gingerbread Houses in class during this time. The supplies for individual kits including the gingerbread, candy, frosting and materials can cost up to $20 per student. The students will create one each and bring them home on the final day of school for you to enjoy over Christmas vacation. Rather than asking for donations of cupcakes, treats, goodie bags, gifts, etc., we are asking for $10 per student to participate in this great classroom project. A demonstration will be given and students will be taught techniques on how to best assemble and decorate their own creations.
I am purchasing the supplies as a group and ask for you to send in $10 per student in cash or a check made out to Mrs. Schemenauer before December 17th. I am so excited for students at OLA to experience this great opportunity. I have done this project with 3rd grade students in the past and they had a terrific time. Please note again that you do not need to send in any donated food items or supplies on the final day of school as the money provided will cover all costs for the party. I hope the students can enjoy these scrumptious treats throughout the Christmas vacation instead of spending money for treats that would be eaten up in just one afternoon in class. 4th Grade Homework Sheet

Dear Students and Parents,

First, homework folders are due to class on
Thursday, December 9th. Please follow the schedule on the back side of this letter. We are back to a regular schedule and there are four nights of homework. Students will also continue working on their rough draft for their mission report. Please see the guideline sheet and rubric accompanied to the report for further information.
Next, Fourth grade will make a Christmas craft/gift for their families next week. Each student needs to bring a wire hanger to class and two boxes of plastic sandwich bags to class. (DO NOT SEND ZIPLOC BAGS PLEASE-THEY DO NOT WORK FOR THIS CRAFT) The cheap, open at the top plastic sandwich bags are required to complete our crafts. All other supplies will be provided in class. Thank you so much for having your students supplies to class by Monday, December 6th, 2010.
Also, students will attend mass on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary on Wednesday, December 8th at 8:15 in the morning. All parents are welcome to attend this mass since it is a Holy Day of Obligation for all Catholics. We are making regular mass attendance one of our biggest priorities this Advent Season.
Thank you to the parents that drove to the Nutcracker Field Trip on Thursday. Congratulations to Alycia and Isabel for being part of such a great performance and sharing their talents with us!
Finally, please replenish student supplies for class on a regular basis including having sharpened pencils daily. Many students need glue, staples, and daily paper on a regular basis. Some are continually borrowing supplies from other students which can be burdensome. Dear Students and Parents,
First of all, thank you to all parents for working with me during parent/teacher conference week. I hope the information provided will help us to continue to work together to help the students reach all of their educational goals. If you have not already returned your student’s conference file please send it to school on Monday so the students and I can track their progress in the coming months. I am sending this homework folder home now in order to give students a head start on next week’s work. There are four days worth of homework beginning today. (I hope this may accommodate students that want to use their weekend to get ahead.) Please remember that the Mission Outline pages are due on Monday, November 29th so students need to organize the notes they completed last week in the outline form.
Also, enclosed in this homework folder is another week’s worth of work. Please review your student’s progress and return any work marked “Signed and Returned” with a parent’s signature. Students receiving below a 75% on any test have the opportunity to make corrections on errors made on the test (on a separate piece of paper) and return it to me by the following Tuesday. This applies to all subjects. For spelling tests, students are expected to write any misspelled word 5 times each in their neatest writing. These efforts will allow the students to receive a C grade on any test. However, if corrections are not turned in the following week, then the original grade issued will remain. Parents can check the homework folders weekly to review student work or login at www.gradelink.com to review part of each student’s grade.
Next, the fourth grade will attend the Nutcracker on Thursday of next week and permission slips and money is now past due. Please let me know if you are able to drive to this field trip by Monday since we need one more parent driver. You can email me over the weekend or send in a note with your student on Monday. Next Friday is the first Friday so all students are to wear full Mass uniform. School will dismiss at noon.

Students will begin the second week assignment for their mission report: outlining the information from their notes. Please see the guideline sheet and rubric accompanied to the report for further information. (This section isn’t due until after Thanksgiving break on Monday, Nov.29th 2010)
Next, fourth grade will host the school Thanksgiving Mass on Wednesday, November 24th at 8:15 am. All parents are encouraged to attend this mass. Please join us for this celebration.
Finally, report cards are coming home today in these homework folders. Parent/teacher conferences are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday of next week. Ironically, I have been summoned to jury duty on Monday, but I am planning to get excused in the morning and return to OLA before conferences begin. However, there is a slight chance I might have to cancel according to what happens at court in the morning. Please plan on attending your scheduled conference and if I am unable to make it I will call the school before noon to have them notify you. Otherwise, I plan on seeing all parents Monday and Tuesday of next week. I have received one cancellation and if you are unable to make it please email me and let me know. Please be punctual for your scheduled time. I look forward to meeting with all of you and discussing your child’s strengths and areas for growth in the coming trimesters. School will dismiss at 12 noon everyday next week.
Also, I would appreciate tape measures and weight scales brought to class on Monday so we can complete our pumpkin math book next week. We are going to do the measurements and weights to see if our estimations given were “reasonable” estimates. Any student bringing in a tape measure or bathroom scale will receive two raffle tickets.
Lastly, I am so thankful during this time of year to teach such a wonderful group of students. I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving full of love and family and friends. I am thankful for all of you! Happy Thanksgiving!

San Juan Capistrano Mission Field Trip

Students may wear their OLA polo shirts with jeans or their full uniform. Please be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. Please arrive to OLA at 7:15 sharp! The bus will leave promptly at 7:30 and we will not be able to wait for tardy students.
Students should bring a packed lunch with their name clearly on it and a water bottle. The students are expected to carry their own personal items throughout the day, so please have their lunches in a small backpack. Any money for the gift shops should also be kept within their own belongings.
We should arrive back to OLA by 2:45 pm. However, traffic is never predictable and we hope you will be patient if in fact we are delayed in any way. Students that do not have a parent/guardian at the school to pick them up at 3:00 will be sent to daycare at 3:15pm.

4th Grade Homework Sheet

Dear Students and Parents,
The homework sheet is different this week due to our half day today, and our field trip scheduled for Thursday, November 11, 2010. All students in 4th grade desperately need to study their multiplication tables. I have chosen to use this week to ask that the majority of their homework time be spent studying all tables 1-12! Please work with your child at least 20 minutes each day quizzing them and studying these tables.
Students will not be completing vocabulary and spelling work this week since we will go to the Mission San Juan Capistrano field trip on Thursday, November 11th and today’s noon dismissal. Instead, students are working on a creative writing project about a Thanksgiving turkey. Please encourage your student to write legibly and use correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar throughout the story. These stories should have a story map and be done according to the narrative writing procedure we have been working on in class.
Please remember to arrive to school on Thursday early at 7:15 am so we can leave for the mission on time. We should return to OLA around 2:45pm depending on traffic. Again, students need to wear uniforms or their OLA polo shirts and jeans. Also, remember to bring a packed lunch and water bottle. Any students that have not turned in the past due permission slips and money should bring them in on Monday. Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to November! Happy All Saints Day to all my fabulous 4^th grade saints! Please note that the 4^th grade class will be hosting an on campus bake sale tomorrow. Please send in baked goods that are able to be sold in one serving sizes. Good examples of top sellers are donuts, cupcakes, sliced brownies or cookies. Principal Long asked the 4^th grade to take this Tuesday’s bake sale just last week, and we have agreed to sale these goods during recess and lunch. Any parent volunteers to work these break periods would be greatly appreciated. All proceeds from this sale go to the 8^th grade graduating class to help cover costs for graduation. This teaches our students to live out their Ambassador of Hope SLE and learn how to care for the needs of others. Please be sure to fill out the San Juan Capistrano permission slip and return the fees to class by Thursday, November 4, 2010. This is a wonderful field trip and the students enjoy it so much. Check the permission slip for all details and information.

Thank you to our parent/family volunteers for the Halloween party and treats. Thank you to Officer Hernandez for his great presentation on Risks and Consequences. It was a great way for students to ask questions and learn about how to make good choices. Math-A-Thon pledge money is due and students that have turned in their money can have free dress on Thursday. Fabulous fourth grade has worked so hard lately!!
The students have finished their Risks & Consequences unit, created building coded structures for earthquake safety out of gumdrops and toothpicks, and written an extensive paragraph explaining the church Liturgical Year. (yes- all in one week)
So since there is no school tomorrow.....homework folders will go home on
Monday when the students return. Be safe this weekend and remember all the good tips Officer Hernandez shared with the class! Thank you Officer Hernandez for your great presentation and the Zometa family for the Halloween happenings! Dear Students and Parents,

Enclosed in this homework folder is a week’s worth of work. Please review your student’s progress and return any work marked “Signed and Returned” with a parent’s signature. Students receiving below a 75% on any test have the opportunity to make corrections on errors made on the test (on a separate piece of paper) and return it to me by the following Tuesday. This applies to all subjects. For spelling tests, students are expected to write any misspelled word 5 times each in their neatest writing. These efforts will allow the students to receive a 75% (C grade) on any test. However, if corrections are not turned in the following week, then the original grade issued will remain. Parents can check the homework folders weekly to review student work and/or login at www.gradelink.com to review part of each student’s grade.

Parent Education Night will be on Tuesday starting promptly at 6pm. I hope the information shared is helpful and we can continue to create an environment in which the student’s school and home support each other. The parent education night is an overview of ways to help your student do well, but it is not a scheduled individual conference in which individual student achievement will be discussed.

Also, please remember to turn in any Math-A-Thon pledge money to me as soon as possible.

We will begin an estimation math project next week. Our room mom, Ms. Zometa has donated a pumpkin for each student to begin working with on Monday for “Pumpkin Math”. Red Ribbon week starts on Monday and students may participate in the daily dress-ups days or wear their standard uniform to school. Please discuss with your child the importance of living a life free of drugs! There is no school next Friday due to a teacher in-service.

Dear Students and Parents,

Progress Reports will be sent home on Tuesday. Please note that these are not report cards! They are merely a glimpse at the student’s progress up to this point in the trimester. The best way to help your student improve is to please help them complete all of the daily and weekly homework regularly. Also students may take advantage Grade First Aide be making any corrections to tests that are below 75% in homework folders and return them to school by the following Tuesday to receive a 75%. These small steps can make a big difference in a student’s academic performance which will greatly assist their grades. Also note that the grading scale is given by the Diocese and it is more challenging than the standard grading scale used by many public schools. Please be positive about your student’s strengths and areas for growth and use this progress report to encourage your student to grow and improve in the weeks to come. Have a blessed week. Also included in this homework folder is the permission slip for the field trip to Mission San Juan Capistrano. This is a wonderful field trip and the students enjoy it so much. Check the permission slip for all details and information.

The ITBS testing concluded this past week. The results of these tests will be discussed at parent/teacher conferences in November. The 4th grade students worked so hard this past week and followed all directions accurately. I am very proud of the effort and attention they gave in class this past week! BRAVO FOURTH GRADE!
The Math-A-Thon will be on Friday, October 15th next week so please send in your signed pledge sheets then. This is a great fundraiser so please encourage your student to raise as much as possible. (This money can be used toward your own personal assessment fee.) Regardless if students are collecting pledges, all students will take the test for part of their math grade.
I am also so proud of the hard work on the California Site projects. Many students asked questions in class throughout the week and became active learners in this endeavor. Thank you for all of your continued support and help. It is wonderful to have you, the primary educators of your children, involved in these educational activities! Happy October to you all! There is no regular homework this week. The IOWA-ITBS tests for all students will begin on Monday, October 4, 2010. Students should be well rested and fed a good, nutritious breakfast in the morning. School begins at 7:55am sharp! We will be testing in the mornings and students arriving late, after the tests begin, will not be admitted to the classroom. Please try to have a regular, early bedtime for students and send a nutritious snack for our morning break at 10:15. Thank you for your help!
Please save the date….Thursday, November 11, 2010 will be the 4th grade field trip to Mission San Juan Capistrano. More information will come in the following weeks, but please save the date and let me know if you are interested in chaperoning this event by email or sending a note with your child. This field trip cost includes splitting the transportation fee for a bus so please take into consideration that if you are chaperoning you will need to pay for yourself and your student.**Save the date and more information will be sent home soon.

Attention Fourth Grade,

The students worked hard taking notes and working on a social studies chapter review. Tonight would be a great night to listen to the CD ROM for Chapter One for our California Studies. Students can study their study guide and even complete the lesson summaries for lessons 1-4 that they began in centers today. The lesson summaries will not be collected but are just tools to help students study the main points covered. 4th grade has continued to work hard on math skills, language arts and map skills in preparation for the ITBS IOWA tests that begin on Monday, October 4, 2010. The days have been rigorous, but already Mrs. Schemenauer is so impressed by how well students have progressed in rounding numbers, estimation, grammar skills, and reading a map. Keep up the great effort and hang in there fabulous fourth grade!

Congratulations to our student council representatives in 4th grade. Ms. Dominique Zometa is our class president. Ms. Alycia Hernandez and Mr. Anthony Palomino are serving as vice-presidents together! Thank you for volunteering your time to represent 4th grade in all upcoming student council meetings and events.
The California Site Project was assigned in class this week. Each student can begin gathering sources and conducting research for their sites as part of their weekly homework this week. Students donating goods to or attending the Western Dinner over the weekend may have free dress on Monday.

The “Math Don’t Leave School Without It” Project presentations will begin on Monday and the final draft paragraphs and illustration should be completed by 9/13/10 as stated in the guideline sheet. Your student will read their essay and present the math problem at the board that you provide the illustration for in the project. Please use problems that the students can understand and solve and present to the class. (Try not to make it too complicated) Students have been shown a project in class to give them ideas on what is expected. Please refer to the rubric and guideline sheet for any further questions. The illustrations will be displayed in the classroom. This project will help students understand that math is important and part of their lifelong learning. Thank you so much for helping them to finish well.
Students may choose activities for their spelling and vocabulary homework from the attached sheet. We have reviewed this together in class. We have also gone over the important details of using correct headings on these assignments and organizing their homework folders.

Daily Homework 9/8/10 (Mid Week Update)

Students not finishing work in class will have daily homework.
Today's writing time was spent using the interview information for the "Math:Don't Leave School Without It"Project and putting it into paragraph form.
Many students finished in class, while a few need to finish at home. All students need to have an adult read over their rough draft that they completed in class and use a red colored pencil or crayon to make corrections to the writing. The students will write their final draft in class tomorrow with Mrs.Schemenauer, using the corrections from their parents.
Also Exel Math 2 was completed on the lesson side. Students are not required to do the Guided Practice side. Those that finished early in class could use their free time to complete the Guided Practice as additional practice.
Student's may wear their PE uniform to school tomorrow since it will be their first official PE day with Coach Wagner!

I am so happy to report that the fabulous fourth grade had an absolutely fantastic first week back to school. I really appreciate the strong effort all of the students are giving daily and appreciate all of the support from parents. These fabulous fourth graders have behaved in such a mature and responsible manner this week! I am so delighted and truly grateful for this opportunity to teach such wonderful students!
Again, please continue to help students adjust to their back to school routines by having a regular bedtime each night and a good, nutritious breakfast in the morning. Also, don’t forget to send a healthy snack for their morning recess (10:15-10:30am) to help your student make it to lunchtime without feeling hungry. As I stated before, these first few weeks back are a time of adjustment for the students and regular routines and healthy food choices will help keep the students from becoming overly fatigued as they get back into the swing of things.
I look forward to seeing all of the parents at Back to School night on Thursday, September 9, 2010 promptly at 6pm in the hall. There will be two twenty minute sessions after a brief all school meeting in the hall.

I am so excited to work with you this year. I look forward to a fabulous year full of fun. Normally, homework folders will go home on Friday of each week. Students should bring these yellow folders to school daily. Homework will be collected for grading on Thursdays. This weekly procedure will begin next Friday, September 10, 2010. However, students will have some unique, daily activities as homework this week that will help get them back into the routine of school at a gradual rate.
Please be sure to help students adjust to their back to school routines by having a regular bedtime each night and a good, nutritious breakfast in the morning. Also, don’t forget to send a healthy snack for their morning recess (10:15-10:30am) to help your student make it to lunchtime without feeling hungry. These first few weeks back are a time of adjustment for the students and regular routines and healthy food choices will help keep the students from becoming overly fatigued as they get back into the swing of things.
I am so blessed to have the opportunity to work with this class. Please note that this Friday is our first school Mass and parents are invited to join us @ 8:15am. School will dismiss at noon on Friday, September 3,2010. Please make transportation arrangements ahead of time.

Happy Summer...

I hope that all the future fabulous 4th graders are spending their summer reading! Spending an hour reading each day (60minutes) will help prepare you for the upcoming school year. Below is a list of the Battle of the Book list for the 2010-2011 school year. The title, author, AR book level, and brief summary is provided for each book. Look over the list and pick a book that interests you to read. Here are some ideas of how to incorporate reading into your summer life:

Join a public library summer reading program

Keep a book in the car and read whenever travelling, rather it is a short trip across town or a family road trip across the country.

Incorporate a family reading hour each evening after dinner in which mom or dad take turns reading to you and your siblings from a book appropriate and interesting to all family members.

Schedule a trip to your local library once a week regularly and spend an hour reading a book without even needing to check it out!

Start a book club with neighborhood friends in which you all pick the same book to read for two weeks and then rent a movie interpretation of the book.Have a movie night in which you all watch the movie together and compare it to the book. (The book is better everytime!!)

If none of those ideas interest you then simply pick up a book and start reading!!!!

Dear Students and Parents,
We have made it to the final week of school. There is homework for this final week! (You will have the whole summer off…so think of it as your final week of work for a very long time!)
We continue our study on Family Life in the classroom and in this homework folder. Your student will bring home their family life workbook “Changing and Becoming”. I believe students are best served by reading it over with their parents and hearing from you. It is a great tool for communication and can allow you to set the foundation for your child’s understanding of what it means to be a Christian and how to handle our personal sexuality. Since it is the final week of school, students do not need to complete writing parts of the assignment if they just read and discuss it orally with a parent. Homework folders including signed reading logs are due on Thursday, June 10, 2010!
Here are our plans for next week:
Monday: Awards Day-Lights, Camera, ACTION!
** Bring your sunglasses, write out your acceptance speeches and get ready to shine like stars at our Classroom Awards at 10:30 in the 4th grade classroom!

Tuesday: Get Your Game ON
**Bring your favorite board games, card games, puzzles, anything from home that can be shared with others and get ready to rumble for Championship Competitions!

Wednesday: Camp Out for Reading
**Bring your pillows, slippers and favorite book to spend the day reading away under your desks while snacking along the way. Battle of the Book Competition in the Afternoon!

Thursday: Sports Day
**Wear comfortable clothes & closed shoes and be ready to play. Mrs. Cordova has lots of fun planned! We’ll start around 10 am and if any parents would like to help please contact Ms.Cordova ASAP!

Friday: Party Like There Is No Tomorrow..

Dear Students and Parents,
Fourth grade is continuing to work hard daily. Please remind your student that school is not finished until June 11, 2010. Many students are tired and would benefit from an early, regular bedtime and having a nutritious breakfast. Also, school begins at 7:55 am! Please be sure your student is arriving to school on time and ready to learn. Thank you so much for your understanding in this matter.
We have begun our study on Family Life in the classroom. Your student will bring home their family life workbook “Changing and Becoming”. Students are not permitted to write in these books and must read the chapters assigned at home and write out assignments on a separate piece of paper. Please read over this week’s assignments from this book with your child. Set aside some personal time to discuss these ideas of love and human reproduction together, sharing our Catholic foundation with your child as you ponder these delicate issues. We will work in a mature manner in class, and students are taught about committed love and get the perspective of our faith as we discuss reproduction and the changing body. There are notes for parents in the book that you should read as you work on each chapter nightly. This is part of the 4th grade curriculum and as I have taught this for many years, I believe students are best served by reading it over with their parents and hearing from you. It is a great tool for communication and can allow you to set the foundation for your child’s understanding of what it means to be a Christian and how to handle our personal sexuality.
Corrections on tests below 75% are no longer accepted through the end of the year. Since we are at the end of 3rd trimester many students need to re-stock their supplies for the classroom: glue sticks, sharpened pencils, erasers, paper, etc.

Dear Students and Parents,
Wow! 4th Grade is going to participate in the City of San Bernardino’s Bicentennial Celebration on Thursday, May 20th. Permission slips went home yesterday and are due to school by Tuesday. Students need to arrive at school by 7:45 promptly on Thursday morning. We will take morning role, arrange driving assignments, and practice the two songs and then leave for St. Anthony Catholic School to catch a bus to the site near Inland Center Mall. (Yes, we need parent drivers/chaperones to drive the students to St. Anthony’s and then escort us on the bus to the site) Please send a lunch for your student that day and we will eat it when we return to OLA at approximately 12:30.
Also, 4th grade will perform at the Fun Fair on Sunday, May 16th. Please check in at the 4th grade classroom at 11:45 am, FULLY DRESSED IN YOUR COSTUME! I will give out the props then and we will perform at 12 noon sharp! Make-up and hair for the performance should be done at home please. Also, please arrive on time for booth assignments. Thank you to our room mom, Mrs.Cordova, for all of her hard work and efforts in arranging all the details for the 4th grade booth. Thank you so much! A huge thank you to all of the parents working our booth on Sunday! We appreciate your efforts so much!

PTG Performance Now Playing: Gold Dust or Bust !

Dear Students and Parents,
The students did a great job at the dress rehearsal for the Young At Heart Club. Keep up the great work! Please continue to practice the songs this week and study your lines and parts at home. Try to perform your part in front of a mirror and practice smiling while singing.
In fact, the PTG performance will be on Thursday, May 6, 2010, at 12:45 in the afternoon and 6 pm in the evening. We hope that all families are able to attend at least one (if not both) performances. Extended family and neighbors of OLA are welcome to attend. Especially consider inviting anyone that might attend OLA school next year. Students need to meet in the 4th grade classroom at 5:40 pm sharp on Thursday night and must be accompanied by an adult. Students are not allowed to be “dropped off and picked up” but must have a parent or guardian present. The students have worked so hard and I am so excited for them to shine at these performances. 4th grade is also performing the Gold Dust or Bust at the Funfair on May 16th at 12:00 noon. So please let me know if any students are unable to come. I really hope they can all attend! Additional information was sent home two weeks ago Friday on the PTG Information Sheet in this homework folder.
This week’s homework has been adjusted to a lighter schedule due to the preparation for the PTG performance. Please pay attention to the schedule! All students need to spend 20 minutes per day reading an AR book in their level, and record it daily on the Reading Log in this folder. Parents should monitor their reading and be sure to record the pages read daily and sign each day. Hopefully, this will increase the amount of time each student is reading.
Also, Friday is our May Crowning of Mary Mass in the Church at 8:15 am. Parents are encouraged to join us in the celebration of the mass and the processional immediately following. Students are welcome to bring flowers to place around our Mary statue. All are welcome to take part in these traditional activities. School will dismiss at noon.
Students are studying a special song to sing as Mary is crowned with flowers. Please study the song this week (also in this folder) and memorize all the words. Students will have a test on Thursday which will count towards their religion and music grade.

Dear Students and Parents,
Just an update on the expectations at this point in the year regarding the student’s independent reading. 4th grade students in 3rd trimester should be reading and AR testing on one chapter book per week. The students and I have discussed this in class. Students are given an opportunity in class to read independently throughout the school week, but should also spend time at home reading for at least 20 minutes daily.
Also, just a reminder that next Friday, April 23 is a half day at OLA. The students’ school day will end at noon and parents need to make transportation arrangements accordingly. Thank you so much for adjusting to this change in the schedule since the teachers will be attending an In-service in the afternoon with other Diocesan teachers.

Welcome Back! Happy Easter to all the fabulous fourth grade students! I hope you enjoyed your Easter vacation and are ready to return back to school.
Please note that 4th grade will be performing in the PTG Show on Thursday, May 6, 2010. Please save this evening for our students to entertain you the parents in the hall. We will have a performance after lunch at school and then again in the evening at 6pm. I hope this early notification will be helpful and that all students will be able to participate and all families and relatives and friends can attend. We will be performing with Kindergarten and first grade. Students should arrive to the 4th grade classroom at 5:40 for check-in and the meeting and performance will begin in the hall at 6pm. More information will be coming this Friday. It would be very helpful for me if I could have a couple of parent volunteers to help me with this performance. If you are interested in assisting me please send a note to school with your child tomorrow with a daytime phone number and I will call you later this week.
There is three days worth of homework assignments and the folders are due back on Thursday of this week. Then they will go home again on Friday for a full four day assignment packet next week. Also, next Friday, April 23 is a minimum day at OLA. There is a Diocesan In-Service scheduled that the OLA teachers are attending in the afternoon, so students will be dismissed at 12 0’clock noon. This is not on the calendar. Please note this change and make transportation arrangements accordingly. Thank you so much for understanding!

Dear Students and Parents,
Students did a great job on their Tall Tale Irish Potato Plots which they read orally to the class on St. Patrick’s Day. It was a lot of fun to help them go through the writing process and the published drafts are displayed on the 4th grade bulletin board.
Please note that the homework folders are going home today since there is no school on Friday. However, students should bring their homework folders back and forth everyday next week. There is four days worth of homework since tonight will take the place of the regular Friday homework.
Students are receiving report cards today. These do not need to be returned to school. As we head into the final trimester I hope that students can make a strong effort to complete all assignments, spend more time studying before tests, and continue to grow and expand their skills. Students and I met in conferences today to discuss their areas of strengths and their areas for growth. They have a plan to improve in the final trimester and I hope they can actively share their ideas with you as you review and discuss their grades together. These grades are a reflection of the grades given throughout the term at www.gradelink.com. I am very impressed with the continued effort given in 4th grade. KEEP IT UP!
Also, in an effort to improve comprehension skills students have been working on comprehension questions and chapter summaries in class for The Trumpet of the Swans book. These notebooks will be due next Friday, March 26,2010. If students have been absent lately, or need more time to complete the work (than that which has been given over many weeks in class) then they need to work on finishing up any part of the notebook that is not complete. Please encourage your student to work on any incomplete work a little bit each night in the week to come. I look forward to collecting these notebooks next Friday and will return them to students when we return from Easter vacation.
The Spell-A-Thon is next Friday. Fill up those pledge sheets and study that list of 75 words over the next week. We are on the last list for our weekly spelling and I hope we can have lots of 100% certificates given out to the fabulous fourth grade students! Remember 100% of the money raised will count toward your 3rd quarter assessment fees!

Thank you to all parents that drove and chaperoned the field trip. 4th grade appreciates your help so much!
Next week is St.Patrick’s Day on Wednesday, March 17th. The fourth grade students have been working on writing an “Irish Potato Plot”. To celebrate, I am hosting a 4th grade potato bar for lunch in class. I will provide a potato for each student and am asking for donations of toppings from students. Please send in a topping of the following in a disposable Tupperware container: shredded Cheese, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, small broccoli florets, sour cream, butter, or any other creative topping of your choice. The students will have an Irish potato feast and share their story one at a time beginning at 11:30.
Sham-O-Grams can be purchased in the office for $1 until Monday, March 15th and will be delivered on St. Patrick’s Day to the students. There is still time to order one for your child by stopping by the school office!
Report Cards will be sent home on Thursday, March 18th. There is no school on Friday, March 19 due to The Anaheim Congress Convention for teachers.

Dear Students and Parents,
Thank you to all parents volunteering to drive to next week’s field trip. Please come to 4th grade at 8:30am Friday morning. All students are to wear full uniforms and bring a sack lunch/drink. We will eat outside at Bridges Auditorium. Parent Chaperones may bring blankets and after the ballet we will go to the cars, get the lunches, and eat lunch on the beautiful grounds.
Next week Dollar Dress Days are back! Students may wear free dress on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday if they bring one dollar to donate to help the earthquake victims in Chile. Thank you for encouraging your student to be an Ambassador of Hope by participating in this fundraiser to helps those in such dire need.
We are continuing in our quest to learn the 10 commandments. This week we have been learning about the sixth commandment “Thou shall not commit adultery”. Our religion book has taught us about the teachings of the Church and encouraged the students to live a chaste and virtuous life. The students have been very mature and asked many thought provoking questions in class. Students are welcome to bring their religion book back and forth to school on a regular basis. We are reading Chapter 17 and I encourage you to open up a discussion with your student about human sexuality and offer your guidance throughout the unit.

March Madness (4th Grade Style)

Dear Students and Parents,
Well as we head into March, the fabulous fourth grade students continue to work hard. Enclosed in this folder is a reading comprehension assessment. This Mid-Year assessment charts the student’s ability to comprehend what they are reading without help from me.(This assessment cannot be corrected for points since it is not a test but instead an assessment of the student’s independent ability) Some students need to improve their ability to use the reading strategies we review in class while they are reading independently. The best way to improve reading comprehension is to increase time spent reading. To this end, I ask you the parent to have your student read regularly for 30 minutes a day. Ask your student to orally summarize the chapter to you as they read their AR book. (Summaries answer Who? What? Where?When? Why? How?-in other words just the main ideas of the chapter) The 4th grade class will have an AR contest and keep track of the AR books read and tested on throughout the month of March. The top 3 students from 4th grade will win a prize and be recognized at the end of the month. So we will have our own 4th grade version of “March Madness” which I will introduce to the students on Monday, March 1, 2010.
Also, (in an effort to improve comprehension skills) we are currently reading Trumpet of the Swans in class. I am modeling how to summarize chapter by chapter and demonstrating how to answer basic comprehension questions in full sentence format. Happy Valentines Day! The students were able to learn the true meaning of love from a biblical perspective this week as they compared and contrasted St. Valentine’s love with Valentines Day in 2010(which often does not focus on the original martyr from the 3rd century). All students watched a video, created a Venn diagram of hearts and finally wrote a comparison/contrast paragraph to decorate the windows of the 4th grade room.
Thank you to our room mom, Myrna Cordova, for the super sweet Valentine Party today. Thank you also to all the parents that have sent in donations for our Valentine Pancake Breakfast on Sunday and those that have signed up to help. Your efforts are greatly appreciated and we thank you so much! The remaining car rosaries will be sold for $7 each at the breakfast and 100% of the profit will go to 4th grade. Thanks so much to Ms. Shea for all of the supplies and beading involved!
There is no school on Monday, February 15th due to the President’s Day holiday. Please note that there are only three days worth of homework for the folders this week. Also, please remind students to sharpen 3-5 pencils at home and come to school prepared with a daily supply of paper, glue, index cards and all the needed 4th grade supplies. It makes the day run smoother when students are prepared and not having to continually borrow supplies from others in the classroom.

Studies show that students that improve the most in reading are students that spend the most time reading daily. We do read everyday in class, yet additional time may be needed for your student to progress to an adequate fourth grade reading level.

The students will work on reading comprehension skills while reading this story and practice their writing skills.

Dear Students and Parents,
The students did a great job with El Camino Real and the mission models were fabulous. Students answered many questions and the OLA greater school community learned a lot from the 4th grade docents! Thank you for supporting their learning!
We will begin reading Trumpet of the Swans on Monday, February 1, 2010. Each student needs a copy of the book for class. Please check the school library or local libraries for a copy of the book if you do not want to purchase it. The students will work on reading comprehension skills while reading this story and practice their writing skills.
Progress Reports will go home on Tuesday of next week. Please check over your student’s progress and return the signed progress report to school by Thursday, January 28th. These are not report cards but merely a glimpse into the progress made this far in 2nd trimester. Student grades can also be checked by visiting www.gradelink.com regularly.
Please turn in any pledge money for the Jog-A-Thon to class so that it can be counted toward your 2nd trimester assessment fees. Thank you for your participation!!
Also, please check the homework folders for any tests in which students have scored below 75%. Students may make corrections on a separate sheet of paper for tests only. Since we are in the middle of 2nd trimester many students need to re-stock their supplies for the classroom: glue sticks, sharpened pencils, erasers, paper, etc.

Happy New Year! The fourth grade class continues to work tremendously well in 2010! Please check the homework schedule for all assignments due on Thursday, January 21. There are only three days worth of homework assignments this week in the weekly folder. Please note the Mission models/projects are due to class on Tuesday, January 19, 2010. There is no school on Monday, January 18th in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King.
Our school jog-a-thon is scheduled for Friday, January 22, 2010! Try and get as many sponsors as possible since any money raised counts toward your trimester assessment fees. On Friday students participating in the jog-a-thon can wear free dress, but they must have a pledge form signed by a parent and at least $10 in pledges to participate.

Happy New Year! 4th grade is off to a great start in 2010! Please check the homework schedule for all assignments due on Thursday, January 14. Mission models/projects are not due to class until Tuesday, January 19,2010. Please do not send them in early as space in the classroom is limited.
Please send your child to school on Monday with gloves or mittens for a special science activity. We are calling it “4th Grade’s Mitten Monday”. Welcome Back!
Please notice the homework assignments for the next two days.(there are only two days worth of assignments) These assignments should be in your student’s return to school section of their homework folder.
Remember this Friday, January 8th, 4th grade will attend a field trip to the San Bernardino County Museum. Please refer to the information on the permission slip already sent home last month. Since we are going on a field trip students are required to wear their full uniforms. The free dress for $.50 will be available for 4th grade students on Monday, January 11th.
There will not be morning tutoring on Thursday, January 7th due to a staff meeting. Tutoring will continue the following Tuesday.
Students were given the guidelines for the mission model/project before school dismissed in December. Students are creating a model of the same mission they wrote their report on in December. If your student hasn’t shared this paper with you, please ask them for it and remind them to share all assignment sheets and helpful reminders with you on the days they are placed in their mailboxes in class. It is the student’s responsibility to get this information from their mailbox and share it with you regularly.

Dear Students and Parents,
First of all, thank you to the parents that attended and assisted yesterday’s 4th grade Christmas party. There were lots of treats and all the students were able to create a beautiful Christmas scarf. Thank you also for all of the donations given for the on campus bake sale. Mrs. Cordova and Mrs. Kinnally spent recess and lunch selling all of the yummy treats! THANK YOU!
Next, there is no weekly homework folder going home today. They will be given out when students return to school on Tuesday, January 5th. However, there are a few academic endeavors students can work on over the Christmas break. All students should be reading an Accelerated Reader book over the break and be ready to take an AR comprehension test when they return to school. Also, there is a bonus point art contest that students can work on if they choose. Please see the attached guideline sheet for the Art Contest and follow directions carefully. Students bringing in their completed project after the break will receive bonus points. In addition to this art contest, attached is the guideline sheet for the California Mission Model project that students can work on in January. This is a creative project that will be due on January 19th. I am only enclosing it now to provide those of you that may want to get an early start on it the appropriate information. Each year the 4th grade students present their projects to the entire school in January and it is a lot of fun.

Students will take a test on multiplication tomorrow (12/15) in class. Students used their math period to prepare for tomorrow's test. Pg. 162 was completed as a study guide in class. Student's choosing to make corrections to this page and bring it tomorrow for the test will receive two bonus points on the exam. This is OPTIONAL and not a required assignment but a good incentive to put in some extra study time.

Dear Students and Parents,
Please check the homework schedule for all assignments due on Thursday, December 17th. On that day the fourth grade class is hosting an on campus bake sale. Please participate by sending in one baked item to be sold and refer to the letter from our room mom Ms. Cordova. Contact her with any further questions or to sign up to work recess (10-10:30) or lunch (11:30-12:30). Later that afternoon, students will have their fourth grade classroom Christmas party at 1pm. Again, see the note from Ms. Cordova regarding the party specifications. On Monday, December 14th the final draft of the California Mission report is due in class. Please be sure to attach the entire report behind the final draft to receive points for all of the report. (Notes, Outline, Rough, Draft w/ final copy on top.)
This week students were assigned a student in the class to pray for during this Advent season. We will attend mass on Thursday and Friday in the coming final week of school before Christmas vacation. School will dismiss at noon on Friday. There is not any extended care on that day so please make transportation arrangements ahead of time. Homework Folders will be collected next week and not sent out until the Tuesday we return to school in January! Thanks so much! Dear Students and Parents,
First, homework folders are due to class on
Thursday, December 10th. Please follow the schedule on the back side of this letter. We are back to a regular schedule and there are four nights of homework. Students will also begin the fourth week assignment for their mission report: the final draft. Please see the guideline sheet and rubric accompanied to the report for further information. (Final Draft is due Monday, December 14th)
Next, fourth grade will make a Christmas craft/gift next week. Each student needs to bring a wire hanger to class and one large package of plastic sandwich bags to class. (DO NOT SEND ZIPLOC BAGS PLEASE-THEY DO NOT WORK FOR THIS CRAFT) The cheap, open at the top plastic sandwich bags are required to complete our crafts. All other supplies will be provided in class. Thank you so much for having your students supplies to class by Monday, December 7th, 2009.
Also, students will attend mass on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary on Tuesday, December 8th at 8:15 in the morning. All parents are welcome to attend this mass since it is a Holy Day of Obligation for all Catholics. We are making regular mass attendance one of our biggest priorities this Advent Season. A big thank you to Ms. Cordova for providing the candles for the Advent Wreaths students brought home on Wednesday. A huge thank you to all the parents that drove to the Nutcracker Field Trip today! I am so grateful for all of the parent support in 4th grade.
Finally, please replenish student supplies for class on a regular basis. Many students need glue, paper, and daily paper on a regular basis and they are continually borrowing supplies from other students which can be burdensome. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

The fourth grade students were spectacular as they hosted the OLA School Thanksgiving Mass today! Every child participated and did well in their roles of service!

I want to extend my warmest wishes for a wonderful Thanksgiving. I am personally thankful for such a fabulous fourth grade class full of active catholics, responsible citizens, life-long learners, and ambassadors of hope!

Just a reminder..... the outline section of the Mission Report is due on Monday, November 30th when we return to school. Weekly homework folders will be given out to students then and will be due back to class on Thursday, December 3rd. (Yes, only three nights of homework as we return to school next week!)

Finally, there are a few students that have not turned in their Nutcracker permission slips which were due today along with the $6 fee. PLEASE bring these forms completed to school on Monday!

Next, fourth grade will host the school Thanksgiving Mass on Wednesday, November 25th at 8:15 am. All parents are encouraged to attend this mass. Please join us for this celebration.
Finally, report cards are coming home today in these homework folders. Parent/teacher conferences are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday of next week. Please be punctual for your scheduled time. I look forward to meeting with all of you and discussing your child’s strengths and areas for growth in the coming trimesters. School will dismiss at 12 noon everyday next week.
Also, please review your child’s multiplication assessment included in this folder. These tests cannot be made up since they were an assessment of student skills. If your child scored lower than 80% please continue to work on multiplication tables daily.

Gerber Baby Food- Glass Baby Food Jar Collection

4th grade students are progressing well in Language Arts and began a unit on business today in class. Students learned about the the Gerber Baby Food Company and how Dan and Dorothy Gerber founded this company in the late 1920's out of a desire to find an easier way to provide food for their own baby.

Students learned about creating a business plan and the pro's and con's of starting a successful business. In an effort to extend their learning and as an exercise of being good stewards of God's creation....4th graders are starting a glass baby food jar drive. Students are asked to collect empty,sanitized glass baby food jars to bring to class to use for future art projects. While Gerber Baby food provides a great service to parents across the country, the glass jars are not biodegradable and should be reused or recycled whenever possible. As Ambassadors of Hope the 4th grade class has set out on a mission to collect as many emptied glass baby jars as possible to be reused in the classroom for future art projects. Thanks so much!!

First of all, thank you to the parents that chaperoned our field trip to Mission San Juan Capistrano. The students were delighted to experience the mission. There were lots of smiles and everyone behaved extremely well!
Also, enclosed in this homework folder is another week’s worth of work. Please review your student’s progress and return any work marked “Signed and Returned” with a parent’s signature. Students receiving below a 75% on any test have the opportunity to make corrections on errors made on the test (on a separate piece of paper) and return it to me by the following Tuesday. This applies to all subjects. For spelling tests, students are expected to write any misspelled word 5 times each in their neatest writing. These efforts will allow the students to receive a C grade on any test. However, if corrections are not turned in the following week, then the original grade issued will remain. Parents can check the homework folders weekly to review student work or login at www.gradelink.com to review part of each student’s grade.
Next, there is a free dress on Monday for any student donating four canned food items to our food drive. Report Cards will go home next Friday, October 20th. Parent/Teacher conferences will begin the following week. Please refer to the schedule sent home in last month’s tuition envelope.

Dear Students and Parents,
The homework sheet is different this week due to our half day today, the Veteran’s Day holiday in the middle of the week, and our field trip scheduled for Thursday, November 12, 2009. All students in 4th grade desperately need to study their multiplication tables and I have chosen to use this week to ask that the majority of their homework time be spent studying all tables 1-12! Please work with your child for 30 minutes each day quizzing them and studying these tables.
There will not be vocabulary and spelling work due since we will not have an adequate amount of class time to work on this week’s lesson. Instead, students are working on a creative writing project about a Thanksgiving turkey. Please encourage your student to write legibly and use correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar throughout the story.
Please remember to arrive to school on Thursday early at 7:15 am so we can leave for the mission on time. We should return to OLA by 3:15 pm. Again, students need to wear full uniforms and bring a packed lunch and water bottle. Any students that have not turned in their permission slip and money should bring them in on Monday. Please note the fee includes entrance to the mission, a guided tour, an adobe activity event, and the bus. The most expensive part of the trip is the bus which includes gas to and from the mission. I know this is an expensive field trip, but I also know how much the students enjoy it every year and watch them learn so much. Every parent is welcome to attend, but chaperones must pay a separate fee in addition to the student’s fee. Each year we have had parents come and enjoy the full day of hands-on learning the mission field trip provides. Also, the fourth grade students have not attended any other field trips this school year in anticipation of spending more money on one field trip rather than using smaller amounts of money for many field trip excursions.
Please note that the students are completing a Native American Book as their chapter 2 social studies test. They will be given one social studies period each day between now and Friday, November 6th. If they don’t use their time wisely in class they will need to use additional time at home to complete the book(test) about California’s first people group.(Due Friday, November 6th, 2009)

Dear Students and Parents,
Enclosed in this homework folder is a week’s worth of work. Please review your student’s progress and return any work marked “Signed and Returned” with a parent’s signature. Students receiving below a 75% on any test have the opportunity to make corrections on errors made on the test (on a separate piece of paper) and return it to me by the following Tuesday. This applies to all subjects. For spelling tests, students are expected to write any misspelled word 5 times each in their neatest writing. These efforts will allow the students to receive a C grade on any test. However, if corrections are not turned in the following week, then the original grade issued will remain. Parents can check the homework folders weekly to review student work or login at http://www.gradelink.com/ to review part of each student’s grade. Progress Reports were due back school signed with parent’s signature today. Please turn them in on Monday or students will be given sentences and sent to study hall.
Thank you to all the parents that came to the Parent Education Night last night. I hope the information was helpful and we can continue to create an environment in which the student’s school and home support each other. Also, please remember to turn in any Math-A-Thon pledge money to me as soon as possible.
We will begin an estimation math project next week. Each student is asked to bring in a pumpkin for our “Pumpkin Math” project on Monday morning. Please write the student’s name in black marker on the bottom of the pumpkin. While the smallest pumpkin is fine, please do not bring a pumpkin in that is too large to fit on a student’s desk or too heavy for a fourth grade student to carry.

Dear Students and Parents,
School is closed Monday due to a Teacher In-service. Homework folders are due to class on Thursday. Students can pick from the spelling and vocabulary assignments list which assignment they want to complete. There should be a total of three vocabulary and three spelling assignments completed this week. (For Group B) I give students the packets on Friday so that they can complete multiple nights worth of homework at their own pace and maybe even use the weekend if their schedule during the week is full. Please note that students should spend some daily time reading an AR book to help improve their reading comprehension skills. During the fourth grade year students need to be able to identify the main idea and understand what the main points of whatever they are reading. Please note the “Book In A Can” project guideline sheet that is included in this homework folder. Students need to bring a minimum 50 page fiction book to school on Tuesday for the book check.
Progress Reports will be sent home on Tuesday. Please note that these are not report cards! They are merely a glimpse at the student’s progress up to this point in the trimester. The best way to help your student improve is to please help them complete all of the daily and weekly homework regularly. Also students may make any corrections to tests that are below 75% in homework folders and return them to school by the following Tuesday to receive a 75%. These small steps can make a big difference in a student’s academic performance which will greatly assist their grades. Also note that the grading scale is given by the Diocese and it is more challenging than the standard grading scale used by many public schools. Please be positive about your student’s strengths and areas for growth and use this progress report to encourage your student to grow and improve in the weeks to come. Have a blessed week. Math-A-Thon Tomorrow

The ITBS testing concluded on Friday. The results of these tests will be discussed at parent/teacher conferences in November.
Next week 4th grade will participate in the Great CA Shake Out to focus on earthquake preparedness and safety. These activities correlate both with our California history studies and science. While discussing California’s many landforms last week students realized that earthquakes can change the landforms in California. Students watched a science video explaining earthquakes in great detail. So we are going to have a special project on Thursday in which students will work on building designs. If each student can please bring a cardboard gift box( top & bottom) (shirt sized) to class before or on Thursday we will be able to work on the project in class. Justin Son has volunteered to bring a large collection of marbles, and I need more volunteers to bring 6 bags of gumdrops and 6 boxes of toothpicks. Please let me know if you can provide any of these necessary materials through an email ASAP! It will be a great way to learn about earthquake safe structures as well as engage the students in a hands-on activity.
The Math-A-Thon will be on Friday, October 16th next week so please send in your signed pledge sheets then. This is a great fundraiser so please encourage your student to raise as much as possible. (This money can be used toward your own personal assessment fee.)

ITBS Testing Continues...

Fourth Grade students will continue testing in the morning everyday this week. If students are absent due to illness they are excused from these tests, however they will not have the opportunity to make up any tests missed.

Students absent from school due to illness this week can use their Social Studies CD ROM given out at the parent meeting on September 30,2009 to complete Lessons 1-4 in Chapter One. ( 4th graders are working on these lessons in the afternoon everyday this week in class.)

Dear Students and Parents,
Thank you to all parents that attended the information meeting on Wednesday in 4th grade. The meeting was informative and I hope the clarification given will be helpful to understand the expectations throughout the school year.
Next week is ITBS(Iowa)testing. There is no weekly homework scheduled. However, I have spoken with students about getting to bed early, having a good nutritious breakfast before school, and arriving to school on time. Please remember that school starts at 7:55am everyday. A good goal is to aim for having students arrive at 7:45 next week so that if for any reason it actually takes longer (traffic, unexpected delays, etc.) students will still be on time for these important tests. These tests will be used to understand each student’s strengths and weaknesses and results will be discussed at parent/teacher conferences in November. **(If you haven’t done so already, please send an extra large t-shirt for students to keep at school for art projects throughout the year.)
Please note that Math-A-Thon pledge sheets went home in tuition envelopes. Students should begin getting pledges (sponsors) for our Math-A-Thon fundraiser. The money earned will count for trimester assessment fees if applicable.

Students completed a math review in class today in preparation for tomorrow's test. An optional (bonus point) assignment was given in class today. Students completing math pg.64 tonight will recieve bonus points on their test and can use the sheet as a study guide.

Dear Students and Parents,
I hope to see all parents in 4th grade on Wednesday, September 30th from 3-4 pm. The meeting will be quick, but very informative and helpful to clarify the curriculum and expectations in 4th grade. I hope to see you there! Just a reminder for the weekend…The California Site Project (diorama & mini CD book) due date is Monday, September 28th.
Students are enjoying art this year on Thursdays, which is actually an extension of mathematical concepts in an innovative way. I am asking that parents send in an old, extra large (dad sized) t-shirt for each student to be stored in the classroom. We plan to work with some paint and water colors in the weeks to come and these t-shirts will be used to protect those beautiful OLA school uniforms.Please note the Pyramid of Prayer Sheet in the homework folder this week. Students should review the following prayers over the next week (during family prayer time, or at bedtime prayer): Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be. Students will be tested on their knowledge of these prayers next Friday.
Also, next Friday October 2nd, is a minimum day and school will dismiss at noon. Please have transportation arrangements made ahead of time. We will be having our first Friday Mass in the church and parents are welcome and encouraged to join us at 8:15 sharp.

Any students that did not complete math pgs. 46-47 (#1-23 all) will need to complete it as homework tonight. Also Excel Math 3 is due tomorrow morning! Please check to see if you have completed these assignments (a lot of classroom time was given before and after lunch) and if additional time is needed please complete these assignments at home.

The classroom philosophy in 4th grade is I do it, (Mrs. Schemenauer teaches the lesson) We do it,(Mrs. Schemenauer guides students through example problems at the board or on their own individual white boards), then You do it! (Students are expected to complete the assignment on their own). Many times when it gets to the "You Do it" portion of the lesson students use their time to talk to neighbors, or sit and daydream in class. If your student is coming home regularly with a lot of daily classwork then please speak to them about working diligently and using their time wisely in class.

The oral presentations for this project will begin on the same day, Monday, September 28, 2009.

The California Site Project Mini CD books were sent home with students today. We went over the expectations according to the guideline and rubric sheet provided. After feedback from some parents and students the due date for the diorama and CD mini book has been extended to Monday, September 28th. Some felt that another weekend would help them complete the project better and give parents more time to work individually with students on the expectations of the assignment. PLEASE WRITE IN THE NEW DUE DATE ON THE ASSIGNMENT SHEET TO HAVE A RECORD OF THIS EXTENSION AT HOME!

Tuesday Math...How Big Is One Million?? (Parent Education Session)

Today in class students continued in their studies of place value. But they excitedly were able to discover 1,000 thousands equal one million! (1000x1000=1,000,000)Students also used the math period to discover that one million is the same as 10 hundred thousands. They were then assigned Pg.40 all and Pg.41 (EVEN #) to further practice these mathematical concepts. Also, they were given thirty minutes in the afternoon to finish up this assignment if they needed more time. Students not finished can complete this work at home. (Pgs.40-41 are due tomorrow morning at 7:55am.)

Also, please note there will be a parent education meeting on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 from 3:00-4:00 pm in the fourth grade classroom. This will be an informal meeting in which I can clarify the fourth grade procedures since you have now experienced life in the fourth grade world! The students have gone over these procedures in class today and should be able to clarify the way their homework is to be completed and organized. Please refer to the student’s knowledge and ask them to orally explain the procedure to you(the parent). Please sign each page of homework your student completes. SOCIAL STUDIES ALERT:

Students received their postcard paper in class for their Social Studies California Site Project. Please follow the directions given on the information sheet.

Daily homework: Students were taught place values in math class today. They completed Saxon book pgs. 36(all ) and 37 (odd). Any student that was not finished by the end of the day needs to complete the assignment at home tonight. These assignments will be collected tomorrow morning for a grade. (Parents are welcome to review this assignment with their student tonight before they turn it in tomorrow!)

CALIFORNIA SITES PROJECT/ SOCIAL STUDIES

Students were given their California Sites Project Guidelines today in class. Please review these guidelines with students tonight. The site selection lottery will take place tomorrow, September 11th in class. ( Students will only be allowed to participate if they bring in their site selection sheet with three choices selected and their parent's signature.) Numbers will be drawn from a bag and students can then select their site by signing up with Mrs. Schemenauer. Final dioramas and CD mini books are due on Friday, September 25th, 2009 when each student will give an oral presentation to the class. California is full of great sites and attractions and we get to have a tour of 17 sites in one day without leaving the OLA campus! Please refer to the guideline sheet for individual due dates and specific requirements. ( Postcard paper will be given out in class on Monday, September 14,2009 for students to complete by Friday, September 18th! )

MATHEMATIC MADNESS!!!!!

Wow! The fourth grade students gave their oral presentations today for their "Math Don't Leave School Without It" Projects. There was a flurry of multiplication, division, two-step problems and even multi-step mathematics presented throughout the day. Students were responsible for taking notes on the presentations given and attempting to identify the mathematical concept presented as well as work out the problems. Fourth grade is full of amazing problem solvers and every student completed the assignment!! YIPPEE!! Once again, fourth grade is forever fabulous!

Homework Alert:

Students located AR books coinciding with their ZPD levels in our classroom library today. Students were individually evaluated by Mrs. Schemenauer. So the homework for tonight is...

1) Students are to read their AR book for twenty minutes.

2) As a portion of their twenty minute reading time they should read two pages orally to a parent, grandparent, or any adult. The adult needs to sign the homework sheet that the student copied from the board in class.

Happy Labor Day Weekend...Homework???

4th grade students should enjoy their Labor Day Weekend. In class this week students have been reviewing the 4 steps of division. They were given eight division problems to work on( showing their work as they go) and apply the four steps of division. (They learned and recite a little tune about these steps in class) Next, they are expected to use multiplication to check their answers. (HINT:Multiplying the divisor by the quotient should give you the dividend) Please be sure to have a parent go over these problems and sign the paper and bring it back to school on Wednesday.

Also, students took home their Accelerated Reader Diagnostic Reports. Parents should review the sheet with students and then sign and return the form to school on Wednesday, September 9th.
