President's Day Holiday Monday, February 21, 2011 (No School....but homework continues)

Fri. February 18 – Thurs. February 24, 2011
We continue reading Trumpet of the Swans. The students continue working on improving reading comprehension skills while reading this story.
Next, please save the date: May 5, 2011! AT 1:00 and 6:00 pm the fabulous fourth grade will perform “Character Matters” at the PTG Shows here with Super Smart Second Grade at OLA. Students have been assigned parts. Enclosed in this homework packet is a CD with the songs for students to practice daily so the words can be memorized. Parents that are willing to help sew costumes or work on set production would be greatly appreciated. Please send in a note with your child or email me letting me know if you can help out with either costumes or set design. I would really appreciate a few parent volunteers and any work you do from home could count toward your parent volunteer hours. More information will follow in the weeks to come, but just know it will be a FABULOUS performance and you really won’t want to miss it!
Students should continue to AR read daily. Just use the Accelerated Reader link at www.olabruins.com to check the book to be sure it is in fact in their AR level. The goal for February is for each student to read 4 books in their AR level before February 28 and score 80% or above on the comprehension test. We also have started taking vocabulary tests on each book read since an increased vocabulary often leads to improvement in comprehension skills. If they haven’t read and tested on 3 books yet, they are behind and need to spend more time in daily reading.
Also, we have finished up our medicine unit in our Open Court Reader book and are moving on to the theme of Survival. Since we already read Island of the Blue Dolphin as part of our natives study in social studies at the beginning of the year; we are skipping it now. Please refer to the new spelling/vocabulary packet for the weekly spelling and vocabulary lists.
Finally, please check the homework folders for any tests in which students have scored below 75%. Students may make corrections on a separate sheet of paper for tests only. All students are doing four spelling assignments this week. They need more practice writing sentences well and giving a strong effort. Their work this week on the President Essays has shown me that some students need more work on basic sentence writing and structure. Report cards will be given out in March and the students need to give their best effort now to ensure they can receive the best grades to reflect all of their strong effort and skills. Student’s grades can be checked by visiting www.gradelink.com regularly.
Have a great week and please feel free to contact me by sending a note with your child or through my diocesan email: yschemenauer@sbdiocese.org.
