4th Grade Homework Sheet
Dear Students and Parents,
Thank you to Ms. Christy for a great Valentine’s Day party last Friday. The kids were able to make two crafts and have some treats in class. Thank you to all parents that sent in just the right amount of snacks to keep the kids happy, without being overwhelmed with too much sugar! Also, thanks for the loads of sugar you sent in for the 4th grade bake sale on Wednesday. Our treats sold quite well and we were able to make a nice contribution to the 8th grade graduating class.
Next Friday there is a no school due to Anaheim Congress. Therefore, when students turn in their homework folders on Thursday, they will not receive them back until the following Monday in March. (The students are quite happy about this…but can always read an AR book over the weekend.) There is also a minimum day on Thursday. School will dismiss at noon due to the WCEA/WASC visiting team. Please try to make sure all students are sent to school on time and able to start the day @ 7:55am with the rest of the class. (Tardy students often interrupt morning prayer.)
Also, please note the homework schedule for this week. Some students are completing double Vocabulary assignments for the book we are in reading in class, The Trumpet of the Swans and the OCR story of the week. Most are only completing the Trumpet of the Swans Vocabulary. There will be a vocabulary test Thursday on the Trumpet words, as well as questions about the book. Please help your student to study for this test. Students need to answer all questions in complete sentences. Also, their Trumpet of the Swans Writer’s Notebook will be due on Thursday, February 26th. Every chapter has a retelling (summary), key events, and what I liked about the story sentence assignment sheet. There are also comprehension questions that should be completed for every chapter 1-21. I modeled how to write these pages for the first 15 chapters of the book. I demonstrated at the board how to answer comprehension questions in complete sentences and use the subject of the sentence to begin the answer portion of the written out answer. I also modeled summary writing answering the who, what, where, when , why, and how of each chapter. Since I modeled these writing techniques for 2/3 of the book, students should have the ability to have Chapters 15-21 on their own.(They were given ample time in class, but some may still need to use some extra time at home due to absences or ability level.) Please look at your student’s work before they turn it in and be sure their writing is legible and they have used complete sentences throughout the assignments. The dictionary skills sheets should also be completed in the notebook for all 26 vocabulary words. Thank you for helping your child in their reading comprehension and writing skills. Thank you also to Ms. Andrade who put these notebooks together for us in class a few weeks ago.
Lastly, “there is gold in them there hills!!” The Gold Rush is on and we are going to be searching for and panning for gold next week in 4th grade. I would appreciate if each student could bring in a 9’ pie tin to use as their gold pan on Monday. **These pans will be returned by Thursday of next week! 4th Grade Homework Sheet
Dear Students and Parents,
There is no school on Monday due to the President’s Day holiday. Please note that students are expected to spend twenty minutes reading an AR book. Accelerated Reader zone of proximal development levels were sent home in January for parent signatures and students are expected to read books in their appropriate levels. Some students are reading books above their ZPD levels and then failing the comprehension tests. Please check that your student is in fact reading a book in their level (which should be logged onto the February Reading Log).
Also, please look over your child’s Trumpet of the Swans Test. Many students did extremely well. This was a test of writing skills and comprehension, as well as vocabulary. Corrections will not be accepted. There will be another test given on chapters 13-end of the book. Please help your child in the weeks to come by studying before the test.
The math assignments for this week correlate with our Trumpet of the Swans book. I have been working with students to help them determine important information in the story as well as summary writing. Students will practice locating important information in this assignment as well as practice basic math skills dealing with money. We have begun this math project in class, and students are expected to find the answers in their books and complete it as their math homework for the week. Please assist your child in completing this assignment. They are expected to give their best effort and are allowed to bring their books home as long as they have them in class for our reading time and Writer’s Notebook assignments.

4th Grade Homework Sheet
Dear Students and Parents,
Congratulations to the 4th grade students for receiving the 1st place ribbon in the Catholic Schools Week Poster Contest. The theme was service. The 4th grade students applied our school wide learning expectations to the theme and were recognized for their creativity and good work!
Please note that reading logs are enclosed for the month of February. Page numbers and parent signatures are required for each day of reading. I have gone over this with the students in class. These logs will be collected on Thursday, February 26th.
Finally, please be sure students have enough school supplies with them on a daily basis. 3 pencils sharpened daily will help keep distractions to a minimal and plenty of paper and index cards are always helpful! Students are easily distracted by others getting up and down to sharpen pencils, so please allow your child some time to sharpen pencils at home this weekend.
It is a privilege to teach your children. You can always reach me at the school office 881-2416 or by contacting me at the following email address with any suggestions or questions:
